Basic information on the grooming process

Each breed of dog has a different coat, and their are several categories for coat types.  Examples of coat types are a single drop coat like a Yorkshire terrier, Shih Tzu, Maltese when a coat has only one layer to it.  Single coats can be grown out, but that means daily brushing to avoid matting.  Or can be cut into just about any style, the most common being one length all over with a round cute teddy bear head.

Another example is a double coat, like a golden retriever, husky, or labrador retriever.  Many more breeds of dogs are double coated, a coat that has two layers.  An inner layer close to the skin and an outer layer for protection.  A double coat has a dual purpose of keeping the dog cooler in summer and not sunburning the skin, and keeping the dog warm in the winter.  Double coats actually should not be shaved, but bathed and brushed on a very regular maintenance schedule.  When a double coated breed is not maintained the undercoat can become packed and the skin will not be able to get enough air and can build up bacteria or even fungus.  When a double coat is maintained on a regular basis no packing occurs, and shedding is reduced.  We will not lie to you, we can not make a dog stop shedding, but we can decrease the shedding. Shayna has taken many classes on double coats, and has used the knowledge of classes and her experience to develop a safe and effective way to groom a double coat.  With amazing shampoo and even better de-shedding products, we can handle the dirtiest, hairiest double coated dog.  It is important to have a professional groomer to properly handle the care of a double coat, it is possible to damage the skin from over brushing called brush burn.  Dogs skin is actually fairly delicate, and can be overworked or even torn from improper handling.  We are trained to handle all conditions, and if a dog is just to matted then shaving it is the safest way to groom the dog.  We are all about the safety of your pet and its skin!
Sometimes certain bugs are discovered during grooming such as fleas, ticks or even dog lice.  It is important to treat the dog immediately to get rid of the bugs, and the grooming process may have to be stopped if contamination is to high a risk.  After a bath a dog must be blow dried to get dry, and if a dog has bugs during the drying process the bugs and any potential eggs can contaminate the trailer. We take precautions to avoid any bug contamination issues, if a dog is highly infested then it is best to treat the dog and reschedule the groom for when the bugs are gone.
Cats
Shayna is trained to groom cats from nail trims to shave downs.  Cats can be shaved close to the skin or just given a bath, we do not trim cats or scissor them.  Cats have the thinnest skin, and are unpredictable so their are more limits to cats then dogs.  Bathing does take longer for a cat, they do not like to be blow dried and have to kennel dry if they will not allow blow drying. The common cat groom is just a shave down and no bath, so no drying needed.  Please call with questions.
